Nevill Holt Opera’s (NHO) Winter Festival 2022 will take place over the weekend of 2 to 4 December, the Leicestershire-based opera house has announced. It will feature performances from world-renowned artists and includes the return of NHO’s candlelit concert performance of Handel’s Messiah (1742).

The festival opens on 2 December with a concert by award-winning saxophonist and TV presenter Jess Gillam. Known for her prestigious Last Night of the Proms in 2018, Gillam will be joined by Manchester Camerata to perform some of the most celebrated works for saxophone with a festive flare. The orchestra will be directed by Caroline Pether.

The concert will take place in the award-winning Nevill Holt Theatre, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £30-£50.

The following day, 3 December, Manchester Camerata once again heads to the Nevill Holt Theatre, this time for a performance of Handel’s English-language oratorio Messiah by candlelight.

The concert will be conducted by NHO’s artistic director Nicholas Chalmers, with Handel’s solos and choruses to be sung by the opera house’s Associate and Emerging Artists, showcasing some of opera’s talented up-and-coming artists. The performance starts at 7pm and tickets cost £33.75-£67.50.

A second performance of Messiah will take place in the Great Nave of The Monastery Manchester on 4 December. This former Franciscan friary in the Gorton area of Manchester is the home of Manchester Camerata. Last year’s performance was a sell-out success. The concert will also be conducted by Nicholas Chalmers.

The performance starts at 3pm and tickets cost £7.50-£30.

General booking for all three events opens on 20 October. Tickets for the two concerts in the Nevill Holt Theatre are available from Nevill Holt Opera, with tickets for the 4 December performance of Messiah from Manchester Camerata. Priority booking for NHO Members is already open and members receive a 10% discount on the Jess Gillam concert.

“We look forward to welcoming you in December!” Nevill Holt Opera said in a statement.
