Opera superstar Renée Fleming is to make her London stage debut in The Light in the Piazza, a dazzling musical by Craig Lucas and Adam Guettel. The production is the first to be staged by Scenario Two, a company recently launched by John Berry, former artistic director at the English National Opera.

Four-time Grammy winner and Tony nominee Fleming stars as American Margaret Johnson. She commented: “I’m delighted to be a part of the London premiere of The Light in the Piazza. Adam Guettel’s score is ravishing, reaching beyond the boundaries of how we think of musical theatre. For my London theatre debut, to play Margaret Johnson – a fascinating, deeply human character whose predicament I find incredibly moving – was an opportunity I couldn’t resist.”

Dove Cameron, star of Disney’s The Descendants trilogy, makes her UK debut as Margaret’s troubled daughter Clara.

The Light in the Piazza transports us to the world of Margaret Johnson and her daughter Clara. As they take in the wonders of Florence, a fateful gust of wind whisks Clara’s hat into the hands of local dreamer Fabrizio Naccarelli. It’s love at first sight, but Clara isn’t quite what she appears and soon they must all confront a secret that’s been kept in the shadows for far too long.

The musical will be staged at London’s Royal Festival Hall on the Southbank during June and July. There will be 20 performances, after which the production is set to tour major venues in North America and Australia. See www.LightInThePiazzaTheMusical.com for more information.
